Pressure sensor glow plugs have been available now for some time. They are being used in more and more vehicles. However, the changing of PSGs (Pressure Sensor Glow Plugs) requires special care and above all, a special tool. Tool specialist KS Tools of Heusenstamm has now responded to this demand.
The company offers a PSG glow plug socket which is specially designed to meet the requirements for changing this sensitive component. PSG glow plugs are currently fitted to various VW/Audi vehicles and Vauxhall models. They are provided with a special combustion chamber pressure sensor. The signals generated are processed in an integral electronic circuit and sent directly to the engine control unit. The control unit is thus able to constantly adapt the fuel injection, manifold pressure and exhaust gas recirculation rate. In order to avoid damage to the expensive 100 Euro PSG glow plugs, mechanics must observe a few important points. Right from the loosening stage, the specified breakage torque must be observed. Even more important however is the use of the special socket.
It surrounds the entire head of the glow plug and is formed in such a way that it cannot damage the delicately-made plug connection. Even though this plug is in widespread use, not all mechanics are yet familiar with it. They should therefore look carefully to see which type of glow plug is actually fitted, in order to carry out the exchange correctly.
These plugs can initially be recognised by the fact that the section behind the thread is longer than usual, since it contains the Piezo sensor and the electronic circuitry. The protective cap included with the special socket (set of 5 pcs.) must be fitted to the connector of the glow plug as soon as the electrical connection has been pulled off. This reliably ensures that no damage due to static discharge or the entry of moisture or dirt can occur during the repair.
The socket has an extended dome depth, i.e. it is more deeply countersunk, so that it is able to accept the glow plug and the protective cap completely. The tool grips the glow plug with a special ball detent. The plug can then be safely removed.
With the aid of the 1/4“ socket drive, of course the exact prescribed tightening torque (M9=11Nm / M10=12Nm) of the glow plug can be achieved. This means that the safe replacement of PSG glow plugs is possible.
